The 2016 Faculty Exhibition provides faculty members at VCUarts Qatar, through a juried selection process, the opportunity to creative research and artistic endeavors to the public.

“The outcome is an exhibition of different thoughts that co-exist under one-roof, representing the spirit of openness and the richness of a multidisciplinary gallery.” – Mayssa Fattouh, Curator

A Faculty exhibition is just a great way to get to know each other, to see what we are up to and what is important to us as artists and designers. The thinking and processes of being a creative person may be unfamiliar to many, and there’s no better way to get the conversation started than to show your work.

Biographies

Ali Khan VCUarts Qatar Professor Fashion Design Doha

Ali Khan is a Doha-based luxury and menswear  specialist with a diversified experience that includes design, forecasting, merchandising, retail and academics, and which uniquely encompasses the five continents. 

His academic affiliations include prestigious schools such as HEC Paris and the Royal College of Art, London, where he is currently working on his PhD  on contemporary masculinity. His award winning works have been showcased consistently in New York and London and are part of the  permanent collection at the Museum of Art in Nelson, New Zealand. 

He is an assistant professor of fashion design at VCUarts Qatar and a regular contributor  to cutting-edge London-based fashion magazine Petrie 66.

Diane Derr

Diane Derr serves as curator of the Innovative Media Studio at VCUarts Qatar where she also teaches in the graduate program. Derr’s practice investigates the construct of narrative as a principle mechanism in our cognitive construction of perception and experience. 

Her work questions existing and prescribed structures of mediated communication and interaction developed through social and cultural constructs. In doing so, her work addresses the phenomenology of interaction within the inter-textual narrative. Through the use of time-based and interactive media she explores and  examines how we, both as viewers and active participants, perceive and experience the representation of events and the event aesthetic.

Donald Earley

Donald Earley, a former New Yorker whose work has bridged fine art and fashion illustration since 1969 has often been described as an artist’s artist. His skills include painting, drawing, etching, drypoint, sketching, lithography and sculpture works in glass and bronze. 

Earley is also an accomplished educator with experience teaching at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland and at VCUarts, Richmond, before moving to Qatar to help develop the fashion program  at VCUarts Qatar. He teaches art foundation, fashion  illustration and drawing, as well as printmaking at VCUarts Qatar.

Fleming Jeffries

Fleming Jeffries is a visual artist who explores the intertidal zone between humans and the natural world. Her work relies on drawing, printmaking and heavy process as a means to slow down the mind’s eye and  distill metaphor.

Jeffries has exhibited in the US and internationally, with work in private and public collections, including the RISD Museum, the Corcoran Museum of Art, and the US Department of State’s Art in Embassies Program. She has been awarded the Winter Fellowship at the Fine Art Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 2007, and Keyholder Residency at Pyramid Atlantic in Maryland in 2008.

She received an MFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design and completed the Printer Training Program at Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is currently on the Painting and Printmaking faculty at VCUarts Qatar.

Law Alsobrook is a graphic designer and educator at VCUarts Qatar where he teaches design courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has an ardent and active interest in narrative studies and production, design semiotics and visual communication and their conjuncture with regards to media and consciousness. 

At present, he is pursuing his PhD at Plymouth University’s Planetary Collegium in the Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts, where his research focuses on the role of narrative and language as intermediate agents of consciousness.

Michael Hersrud

Michael Hersrud is a multidisciplinary designer investigating ‘context of place’ as a means to experiment with design processes and technologies, develop visual narratives, and examine pedagogical practice. 

In his creative practice, Hersrud investigates a range of themes based on cartographic language, personal geographies, playful interactions and graphic form generation. He is an assistant professor at VCUarts Qatar where he specializes in teaching design technology, visual narrative, experimental image-making processes, time-based design and interaction.  

Hersrud received an MFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2006. His design work and films have been exhibited in North America and  internationally. Recently, Hersrud co-edited the book ‘The Donkey Lady and Other Tales from the Arabian Gulf,’ and co-directed the Tasmeem ‘3ajeeb,’ a biennial international art & design conference in Qatar. 

He has been a guest speaker at TypeCon, AIGA National Conference on Education, College Art Association, and Digital Hype Symposium at the University of Delaware; and published papers for the Design Research Society Journal and the Qatar Foundation Telegraph.

Michael Perrone

Michael Perrone is an American painter originally from Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1989, he graduated from Muhlenberg College with a degree in Russian Studies and Political Science. He went on to study painting and art education at The School of The Museum of Fine Arts – Boston, and in 2004 received an MFA in Painting from The University of Pennsylvania. 

In 2006 Perrone mounted his first solo show: Home  and Away, at Michael Steinberg Fine Art in New York.  Perrone’s work has appeared in: The New Yorker, Elle Decor, O at home, and Time Out New York. The Last Picture Show, exhibited in 2008, was Perrone’s  second solo exhibition at Michael Steinberg Fine Art.

Nathan Ross Davis

After studying sculpture at Oregon State, Davis earned an MFA in Design at the California College of the Arts  in San Francisco. Nathan began teaching at Ohio  University and then Montana State University before coming to VCUarts Qatar.

He taught graphic design for  5 years including courses in digital media, identity,  typography, publication design, design principles and an interdisciplinary seminar called Landscape / Mediascape. Davis served as the Graduate Studies committee chair at Montana State, where he taught a seminar on media and identity and served as an MFA thesis advisor. Davis’ research and personal creative work encompasses typography, landscape, media, and collaborative design processes.

In addition to his activity as a researcher and design educator, Davis continues professional practice through Arcadian Studio, a design studio and consultancy with his partner Jennifer Davis. His design work has appeared in Print Magazine, Graphis, Under Consideration’s FPO Awards, Design Boom and Creative Quarterly.

Thomas Modeen

Dr. Thomas Modeen is a Finnish architect, designer, and academic interested in exploring, designing and realizing concepts, artifacts, spaces and  environments intended for various uses, contexts  and subjective customs at a variety of scales and degrees of detail. 

He has a degree (BFA) in Product Design from  Parsons School of Design in New York, and architectural degree from the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA-Dipl.) and Royal College of Art (M.Phil.- RCA) in London, and did a PhD with the Additive Manufacturing Research Group (AMRG) at Loughborough University in the UK, researching the use of 3D printing in the context of Design and Architecture. 

Modeen is also the Director, along with his wife Maysaa Al-Mumin, at Architects Independent (AI), an interdisciplinary design practice currently based in Kuwait and Doha.
