Confessions of a Local

The collection offers a platform for expression under the uniform of Thob and Abaya, using the essence of the culture’s DNA to create an altered khaleeji anti-form.

About the Selected Project: Confessions of a Local

Najla’s presentation is very well achieved. She has an amazing approach to power-woman dressing. Her inspiration for her collection is very contemporary and intellectual but also emotional and daring. I find it very interesting how she mixes classical ethical elements of her family’s journeys with modern elements, such as tailoring. Her silhouettes are very well achieved.

Her inspiration for her collection is very contemporary and intellectual but also emotional and daring.

The VCUarts Qatar Fashion Design department is extrapolating culture as an approach to fashion design allows for radical investigations that consider unconventional, and personal perspectives. These new perspectives are redefining aesthetics, celebrating innovative thinking, and challenging what is familiar.

I applaud Juan Hernandez’s selection of Najla Al-Eida as this year’s Curators Pick. For the past three years, I and the fashion faculty at large have all been consistently and greatly surprised and deeply impressed by Najla’s unique vision and unwavering determination to develop her own unique voice, as expressed in her fashion collections.

Transcending the obvious task at hand of a designer’s ambition to produce a creative visual aesthetic for their collections, Najla explores and disrupts sensitive cultural norms as she carves a highly creative niche for herself as a voice of her generation, inviting the world to see a new perspective.

Finding the courage to disrupt traditional norms is the mission of every great artist. I predict Najla Al Eida will continue to disrupt and inspire a world always in motion and find continued success in her creative journey.
