Design in areas of conflict
Crossing Boundaries Lecture Series
November 18, 2019 at 6pm at the Atrium at VCUarts Qatar (for the General public)
November 20, 2019 at 5pm at the Atrium at VCUarts Qatar (for VCUarts Qatar only)
In this Crossing Boundaries Lecture, Ghadeer Dajani, the Design and Production Manager at Disarming Design From Palestine (DDFP), and Raed Hamouri, the Executive Director at (DDFP) will talk about how occupation restricts craft and product development, and where politics, design and crafts meet. How can designers be empowered to more actively engage in society through collective design-thinking courses and social design impact?
The workshop participants will design new products based on the techniques of the items that each of them will bring to the workshops. They will then focus on their product’s narratives. What are the complexities? Is there a political dimension behind the product, its production and distribution? What does it mean from a social and ecological perspective?
Disarming Design from Palestine is a thought-provoking design label for the development and presentation of contemporary design from Palestine. The products vary from ceramics to toys, and from fashion to household items. They are made by designers and artists who are working in collaboration with local producers, and who are feeding innovative ideas for the production of crafts.
Ghadeer Dajani is a Jerusalem-based interior designer, and the production and design manager at Disarming Design From Palestine (DDFP). After having participated in DDFP workshop in 2015, she made two successful and moving designs. She works on product development, supervises the workshops, and takes care of the entire production process of the objects at DDFP. She also has a broad knowledge of design, as well as material and production possibilities in Palestine. Dajani will collaborate on the new design program, develop the collection of the products, and supervise the workshops.
Dajani earned her Bachelor of Arts d in Business Administration from Birzeit University in Palestine. She then pursued her passion for design in Italy where she earned her Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design from Florence Design Academy. She is also the co-founder of Memargi Design studio in Ramallah.
Raed Hamouri is the executive director of Disarming Design From Palestine and an active community builder. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, and studied management and theater. He is conducting research into art as a form of resistance. He lives and works in Ramallah. Hamouri has worked among many international organizations in sustainable development and community building for over 14 years.
He is the director, activator and strategic developer for Hosh Jalsa, the community-based Learning and Action center in Birzeit, which also serves as DDFP’s headquarters.
